Hi, I’m Buster, and I need to tell you something important about me right up front — I’m a serious resource guarder. I don’t mean to be difficult, and I’m not trying to be mean. I just can’t help myself. When I think something is mine, I guard it. That’s how I’m wired.
If a person tries to take something away from me, that’s when I make bad choices. So the trick is simple: don’t take things from me — distract me instead. If you toss a really tasty treat in the other direction, I’ll run to get it, and then you can safely pick up whatever I had. My foster mom is smart like that, and I need a family who is just as smart and understands how my brain works.
I get along great with other dogs. My issue is only with people trying to take my stuff. Because of that, I can’t live with kids — it just wouldn’t be safe if they dropped something and I decided it should be mine.
But here’s the other side of me: I’m a sweet, loving guy. I adore my people. I want to be in your lap, I want to be close to you, and I want to be part of your life. I just also really love my things — even toilet paper. My foster has to keep the bathroom door shut now. And yes, that picture of me with her slipper? I wanted it to be mine. She tossed a delicious treat, I ran to get it, and everything was fine again.
I’m not a bad dog. I’m not trying to be difficult. I just need someone who understands resource guarding and will keep using the training that helps me make good choices. If you’re patient, consistent, and willing to work with me, I’ll give you all the love I have.
I’m Buster — and I’m looking for the right person who gets me.
